You need to determine where the problem lies: It could be the computer, the router, modem, or the phone lines themselves.

Do you have any obvious noise on the phone line you are using? Plug in a handset and check. If so, then determine if the noise is on the line coming into the house. AT&T is usually responsible for the wires going up to the house, but everything from the main box in is the responsibility of the homeowner. Keep in mind that you might still have a wiring/data transmission issue even if you don't hear noise on the handset, but that is rare. A phone call to AT&T to verify they aren't having problems on their end might be a good idea.

If you can hook the computer directly to the modem, then you can verify whether the problem is the router. If you get the same throughput problems on multiple computers, then you know the problem probably isn't the computers themselves. Change cables to make sure you don't have a bad network cable.

Unfortunately, eliminating the other possible causes leads you to a bad modem, which you can only verify by replacing the modem.

Connect directly to the modem and see how your speed works. If it still drops then you should change out the modem, its most likely getting hot. If the speed stays normal connected directly to modem then you have a bad router.

Thanks for the comments all

we pay for high speed DSL.

here is my speed

it seems to be back to normal....

i have had an AT&T guy out here not to long ago cuz we were having very slow connections, he checked all the wires and they were all fine except for the phone jack that we use for the net. so we had him install a new one.

my house is around 175 years old so you can imagine what most of the wires look like ;)

if it starts acting up again ill connect directly to the modem and see what happens.

I surely don't know, what speed your ISP promises, but the above speeds look pretty low to me, as for DSL connection.

You can try temporarily disabling your anti-virus software on your computer to see if it goes faster? Sometimes the firewall settings are set too high which can block and sometimes slow you connection down. Reseting your browser settings may also help.

Try going into the command prompt and type in "ping google.com" to see if you have 0% packet loss? If yes, it is good so it is something else on your computer. If no, try typing in "ipconfig /flushdns" and a new command, "netsh winsock reset all". Restart your computer and see if it 0% packet loss. You want 0% packet loss.

I know your with AT&T and you're probably on a contract but I would recommend Comcast Xfinity. You can get the performance at 12 Mbps (download) and a free router with your cable modem as long as you have Comcast! I'm running a D3 EMTA with 20 Mbps on a home network of 4 pcs and it works great!
