Internet Connection Speed

i hope i am in the right forum, i am new here & a novice, so if i am not please redirect me.

First my laptop is a HP Pavilion zv6007 w/ 2.0GHz AMD Athlon™64 Processor 3200 w/1268mb (1gig stick + 256mb stick) of RAM.

Second, i use RoadRunner in Cincinnati for my internet service provider

Third, my question: i was using the RR high speed internet & using the RR broadband speed test i was getting almost the max of 5mbps they offered as i usually got a reading of 4.80mbps or higher. So yesterday i find out they have this new "TURBO CHARGED RR" that offers a max of 8mbps & i decide i would like to try it. Since i got it late last nite the best reading i have got on the RR broadband test is 6.93mbps & usually get between 6.3-6.7mbps, so i am not close to 8mbps. Now the upload changed to offer a speed of up to 512kbps & i usually max out on testing that , so there is no problem there. I have tried a bunch of Internet test speed sites & i get a number between 2000-4000kbps, wich being a novice i am not sure of what the difference is in the #'s, but some says "i need help" & others "your running great" . So could anyone offer a suggestion of why i was having no trouble maxing out when it was possible to get 5mbps, but i can't get close to the 8mbps i have the ability to get to now??? ANY help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading my post.

You never get the whole speed advertised whenever the company is, you'll always get a loss in the speed, the place where you live and their central also affects too, etc.

Try downloading off a ddl site that supports multi-connections and post up your max speed seen, i'll tell you if it's or not.

could you please be more specific as i have no idea what a "ddl site"is, sorry, like i said i am a novice. thanks

Heh, Direct download, is a site that lets you download content directly that lets you download stuff without having to use a p2p program

sorry Chupacabra, i am lost here, as when i used different search engines to search DIRECT DOWNLOAD, i get nothing but movies & videoes i have to purchase. I know your trying to help me & i am no doubt the problem here, i was hoping you would post a specific website or something, but thanks anyways.

think i may have solved problem

my friend stopped over who used to work for a communications company & he investigated my whole setup as to why i am not getting the speed RR says it is selling me. Well what he found & he said he'd stake his name on that was my problem, was that the cable i have running from the pole to my TWC box on side of my house is the old RG59 cable wich he said what i have looks over 20 years old & probably is as i have lived here longer than that. from the box on through the rest of the house is the newer RG6. So would anyone agree that old RG59 could be causing me to have connection problems? thanks for any replies
