Internet disconnects when computer is closed

My girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite laptop, she has wireless cable internet. When she closes the laptop, while leaving it on, the wireless network disconnects, how can she get it to stay connected so she can stay on aim etc...?, because that doesn't seem normal to me, thanks in advance.
 
When you close the laptop, there is a pin at bottom of the screen it will push the switch on the keyboard, laptop is temporary suspend. No other option unless you want to cut the pin off.

you just need to change the setting so the machine does not go into standby when the lid is closed
right click on desktop -> properties -> screen saver -> click on the button Power
and the setting you need should be in there
 
yes apj is right, ranarok i think you need to make sure your facts are right before you go telling people to do things like that.
