Internet is slow on one computer

Hey so I have my desktop connected to the modem directly and a phone and laptop wirelessly. And the internet has been really slow on my desktop since about yesterday. but its fine on my phone and laptop, even if I connect the laptop by ethernet with the same cable and everything. on my desktop im getting a 430ish ping and download speeds between around 0.3 to 0.7mbps with speedtest.net (melbourne server). I usually get at least 4mbps (which the laptop still is getting).

I tried disable and enabling the device
restarting router and computer
uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter (Broadcom somethin)

I also tried downloading the latest lan driver from asrock's site and installed it. but wierd thing, its version 14.6.4.2, but device manager says I have 14.6.1.0.

Also tried booting into safe mode with networking. this time in speedtest my ping improved a tonne to about 60ms but my download speed was about 0.8mbps.

I tried testing again now and my ping just in normal windows not safe mode is good now for some reason (40 ms), but download speed is still bad.

Also, also I've noticed that i can torrent at a decent speed even though browsing and speed tests are real slow. I was getting in the 150ish kB/s range just now. Which is still a little slower than usual but far better than my speedtest suggests.

You guys got any suggestions? i would really appreciate any help.

Specs:
modem: dynalink rta1025w
motherboard asrock z68 extreme4
processor: i5 2500k
gpu: sapphire amd radeon 6970
ram: 8gb g.skill ripjaws

not sure if any of that helps

"torrenting" bad word there.....

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Thanks a tonne for ur quick response

I forgot to say I had already downloaded malware bytes anti malware
The problem was that the internet was too slow to update it and the update would restart a few times then fail. I did scan though and it found nothing

But I did a bit of googling and found this method to update offline.

Did another scan and got nothing

Downloaded and ran Rkill It would show a black screen and then dissappear. eventually noticed that my antivirus was blocking it and once i allowed it it worked but I don't think it found anything.

btw all these things i downloaded on a nother computer and copied over

You aren't running the latest database for malwarebytes, the latest is 8185. Have you tried doing a system restore back to a day that it was working fine?

If you downloaded a manual update, it was an old one. Try the system restore and let me know if it works.

Tried the restore and it didnt really seem to help
browsing is still slow but couldnt get a speedtest to work

with the malware update i manually changed the definitions out so it still shows the old number even though it is updated.

thanks for your help so far
any other options

If you were using the latest database it would show it. What happens if you boot to safe mode with networking, can you update malwarebytes?

Go here and download the lastest database from my files and put them at

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware\rules.ref

http://www.mediafire.com/?wzopf7u0meqkwz0

Tried using your file and still got the same version number. I think that when u change itmanually the version number in the logs stays the same.
Thats what it says here too.

I remember doing the manual update about a couple years ago and it showed the correct version. Not sure whats going on in your case.

However, to try diagnosing the ethernet adapter on your system, you may have to go get a dedicated network card and install it to see if the onboard card is failing.

Today i tried running ubuntu of a flash drive and doing a speed test.. The speed was the same as in windows aka awful. Does that mean this is definitly a hardware issue? In which case shud i rma my motherboard its still under warranty

hey I bought a pci netowrking card today disabled the onboard lan and tried through this one and didnt see an improvement
couldn't get speedtest.net to run t kept saying configuration load failed
but general browsing was just as slow as before

have you tried directly connecting to your modem? maybe a bad port on ur router.
my modem is kind of a combined modem router thing

also I've tried connecting a laptop through the same port and I got good speeds so I think that elminates that.

Sound like either a modem/router issue or an ISP issue.

ok. but if so why does the laptop work fine on the same wired connection and same cord.

and if it is a modem or isp issue how should I proceed?
my isp doesnt really want to help me with this because one computer is working so they say its my problem not theirs

and again thank you for your efforts

I know its a desktop pc but is there anyway you can take it to a friends house and see how it connects and if the speed is better? If the speed is normal then its your modem/router, if its the same then its something with the hardware on the pc.
