Internet Not As Fast As Expected?

I recently upgraded to fiber optic internet (30 mbps) and found that it's not as fast as I expected through a router. However, when I'm using a direct connection the speed is crazy fast (30-33mbps). But when I use a router (some old D-Link router I bought 5-6 years ago) I get only 4-6 mbps :(. What is going on and how can I improve internet speed over a router?

BTW I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop, purchased 2007! Thanks!

I had the same issue but when i upgraded my router to a linksys E2000 i got my full speed from fiber optics and connect all the time to 30 you can get this same router at walmart its a dual router check it out on there site.

i was on a d-link as well :(

Oooh the Linksys E2000 looks pretty neat. But what's the difference b/t wireless N and wireless B? I think my laptop can only support wireless B.

for your fiber optics if your provider is ATT Uverse you don't need a router. the internet and cable box is a router.

Currently, my fiber optics comes from the city utilities company. My former ISP required a cable box, however this service does not.
