Internet Service

I currently have DSL through my local phone company. When I am online on my computer my son has trouble with XBOX Live. He says it lags. So when he plays XBox Live, he disconnects the wireless router and hooks directly into the modem. I would like to be able to be online when he is playing XBox Live. What options do I have?

What speed do you pay for? If there is a higher speed package available I'd go with that. If not, I'd look into finding a cable internet provider, as cable is much better than DSL.

Cable is a lot better then DSL but sometimes cable is not available where you live not sure where you live but generally there are a lot internet providers out there you need to shop around before you commit to one cause some will charge you up the ass if you're not too careful.

They raise the price anyway. makes no diff.
Then threaten to switch. that get there attention.
Right now im happy. had Comcast and just raised the prices.
Have AT&T Uverse and picked the option for fastest.
I do have fiber optics now. love it.

There is only one internet option available through my local phone company. I live in a very rural area. Cable is not available. U-verse is not available.

I have cell phone service with Verizon. After speaking with about 3 different customer service representatives, I found out that they do not offer servce in my area either.

You could get a modem/router with more than one ethernet port, they are cheap and plentiful. Look up your ISP's website and see what plans they offer, find out how far you are from your local telephone exchange, as on copper this determines the maximum speed you could pull from your line, depending on which plan you have.

A modem like this would do: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...006&cm_re=modem_router-_-25-112-006-_-Product

For an internet plan, you'll want something at least 8mbps (they will call this 8MB/s, don't be fooled) for multiple users browsing the net and so on.

Here is what the website said about the plans offered:

"ADSL with speeds from 3 meg to 16 meg is available."

My phone bill says my plan is 384/3MB.

I have done a speed test: Download 3.12 Mbps Upload 0.425

I live about 10 miles from the telephone office. Is that too far for 8mbps to work like I want it to?

BTW, my internet is $33.77 a month, which I think is kinda high.

There are still quite a few areas of North America that don't have high-speed Internet. If you live in rural areas, it's usually what comes down the phone line or nothing.

Your max upload looks a bit slow, that should be about 1/4 of the download speed. Your $ rate is a question of what is available. If that has no bandwidth cap you may be better off than a plan with a higher speed but bandwidth cap. For gaming, you need higher speed and no cap. In the advertising blurb they usually specify rates as being "up to".
