Internet speed with router

Hi guys, I have my DSL internet at 7Mbps when it is plugged in directly through my modem to my computer. But when I use my router for the internet I get anywhere between 1Mbps to 3Mbps. I find this odd because I have the latest firmware for my router.

Any suggestions on how I can probably get faster speeds?

Thanks

Btw Windows says my wireless connection is excellent.

I am using wireless on when I am connecting to my router yes.

Yes I did do a speedtest... that is how I found out my speeds were lower.

well, wireless routers are known for being not nearly as fast as wired routers. but i don't think by that much.

so...
any other network traffic? since its wireless, if you don't secure it then a neighbor could possibly be leeching off your connection.
how far of a distance is there from the router to the PC? if it has to go threw walls/doors/etc it would be slower.
how old is the router? it might not support that much speed on its wan port.
how is it configured? could it have accidentally been set up to limit traffic to certain LAN IPs? (like the one your PC is using)

Ok it is secured and I monitor it. No one else has been accessing it.

That is what I think is the problem... I might be too far from where it is. I was thinking on buying a wireless network card but before I do, why do I get excellent as a signal strength with the one I have built into my laptop?

My router is 1 year old.

It has not been limited to traffic to certain IPs.
