not necessarily. Your assuming the telephone support tech actually knew what they were doing... (in a lot of cases that's not true). I just want to be sure before proceeding.

open taskmanager, processes tab, click the CPU column header twice. that will show which processes are taking up how much CPU time. Then (with taskmanager up), go to a webpage and see which file is taking up your CPU time and possibly causing the slowness. (my first thought is that it may be your antivirus prog, but let us know). :)

whell firefox is the only that uses cpu and from about 5-8-10 then nothing
hmm.. how it can be my antivirus ? i've benn running ok with the same software on my pc for months :(

EDIT:ps when i clicked to post this msg firefox whent about 30 cpu usage

btw i've just runned a bandwidth test from my isp site and i got 24.174 kbytes/sec or 217.39 kbits/sec .... this sucks ... i should be getting 45-50 kbytes/sec :(

if it was your AV prog, you would have seen it's executable take up the processor time...

does it get any better during off hours?.. late at night...

somethin with your modem may be wrong, buy a new one from a place that has a good easy return polocy, try it out and see if it helps. if not return it :) heh.

I agree, try a new modem, if that doesn't help I have one other question, how far are you from the trunk line that your ISP uses? I have cable and the main trunk is almost 20 miles away, therefore instead of getting the 4mb/s that I should be getting, I get more like 1mb/s on a good day. I would guess that you're just not close to the main traffic lines, and therefore farther away from the strongest and "best" signal... If this is the case, then there isn't much that you can do, except move closer to those lines :)

and about the how far is the trunk

Oh, then if it's just recently that your internet has started to run slower, then my guess is that your ISP has had an increase in the amount of people using their service in your area without any increase in the bandwith support in your area. Comcast did that to me, so our internet was very slow until they connected some more lines...

Well, if your laptop's fine, then I'm stumped. Should work fine on both computers then, don't know what would cause the slow down. Sorry for the confusion :o
