Internet/Wireless Setup problem

I have an HP with Windows XP with a wireless card on it. Yesterday I had to erase and rewrite Windows XP on it. Now that I have, I can't connect to the internet. I've tried going through some of the steps in the Control Panel/Network and Internet Connections...and still I can't get those two god forsaken computer screens to show up at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

This computer started having problems when my stepdad put a disk into it that basically wiped it out. When that happened, it was having the same problem...the 2 screens were missing from the bottom and it wasn't picking up a signal. Somebody I know came and set it up in a matter of minutes. It's rather annoying to me that I can't do it myself.

Look in device manager, you are most likely missing drivers for the wireless and the lan and others. Also the icon you are mentioning will not show by default, you need to enable it. Go into network connections and right click on the lan connection, click on properties. Click on the box that says show icon in notification area when connected. However, the wireless icon will only have one screen with radio waves next to it, thats set automatically usually.

also..
sometimes you have to right click the wireless card in the network applet , click properties, then the wireless tab and check the box allow windows to config your wireless.
