Internet work work in Debian Linux! HELP!

I'm attempting to run Debian Linux on an HP Pavilion zv6130us. I have it installed and all features seem to work, but I can not get internet. My laptop has a wireless card and a wired interface. I have tried connecting it my ethernet cable modem and i'm not sure how to get it to think about a wireless connection. I did a dmesg and searched for "802.11" and found nothing. My wireless card is a Broadcom 43xx, and it is built in. Please help, I'd love to stick with linux, but it is pointless if i have no access to the internet. Keep in mind, I'm new to linux... I can do some commands in the terminal but I'm not too farmiliar with the OS. Thanks! :confused:
 
Do a new install with the internet cable plugged in, it will automatically configure the newtwork connection. As far as the wireless card it can be a big PITA.
 
Yep. Wireless and Linux don't agree. REALLY new Mandriva starts to bridge the gap. You're really lucky to find one that works out of the box with any distro, though. There's too many proprietary chipsets and not enough developers. Your wired net should work out of the box, though.

It's part of the vicious cycle of hardware support Linux has been trapped in for years. Vendors don't support Linux because it isn't popular. Linux isn't popular because venders don't support it. I'd like to see it get corporate backing and go like Apple. Linux hardware, Linux software, and no compatibility with anybody else. Make one thing and make it good.

As for as the wireless is concerned, though, either get a card that is listed on the HCL or upgrade your computer to have it onboard.

P.S. HP doesn't work well with time.
