Alright, im currently looking after someones house and they said for me to just hook my computer into their internet ( ADSL ethernet modem, model DSL-300l made by d-link)

now when i boot their computer up with it all connected it works fine, but if i switch the cable over to my computer i get nohting.

My computer works fine at lans and anywhere with a router... but this place doesnt have a router.. im running straight from the modem.

i'v tried changing cables, installing windows on a different partition to see if it would auto configure, and a bunch of other various things that i though MIGHT work..

AMD 4800+ x2
4 gigs ram
nvidia a8n32 sli deluxe mobo (using the built in nvidia ethernet controller)
2x 7900GT's pci-e
windows XP pro

if those specs help at all... and also when i look at network connections... it stays at accquiring network address for about 2 mintues.. then goes to "connected" but it doent recieve any packets... just sends them.

i had this problem before when i tried hooking my old computer directly to the internet... it would only work wiht the router.. and it had way diff specs...(intel 800mhz .. 3xx some odd ram...running windows ME ) so im guessing theres just some settings i need to mess with.

any help would be apreciated.

Usualy with DSL modems, they require some sort of software or PPOE authentification to access them. Its basicly like a high speed dial up, and a username/password probably needs provided (usualy done by the router), or in the case, by some software on the computer. You would need to find out this infomartion from your friend, or the ISP.

alrihgt thanks, ill dig through the many books and cds stashed around the desk and try to find one from the isp..

edit: nothing.. however i remember reformatting this computer before and it didnt need anything... that i remember... however, any ideas on where this info would have to be entered? or would i have to find some disk. (casue i cant contact the ISP... they wont help me unless i know the account number and all that fun stuff *rolls eyes* they cant even give me a yes or no answer... *sigh* great customer service.
