well, if someone could please answer quickly, as i think its a kind of noob question, but this program is telling me i am getting lower internet speeds because of my firewall/NAT configurations, how do i change those to speed all this up? i mean, is it common to have a six mega-byte a second connection and never see more then one of it? and that was almost a year ago now...

Go into the router settings and forward the ports that the program uses to the PC that is running the program.

Do you mean your ISP has given you a 6 megabit/second connection? If so, the server(s) you are downloading from must be able to send that much data for you to use the 'full' speed of your connection.
 
you have a six megabit connection, not a six megabyte connection

and you need to set up port forwarding (or atleast triggering) for "this program" (shareaza, cough) to work

it's still slow, tho. gnutella is barbaric in terms of speed

and the six megabit/megabyte thing, whats that about? so what is my actual speed?

You're connection is 6Mbps, not to be confused with 6MBps. The difference being that internet connections are rated using bits per second, and 8 bits make a byte. When you download a file, it's telling you the speed it bytes per second.

Lets assume that you get all of the 6Mbps that you are promised (although it doesnt actually happen). Once you do all the math, your max possible download speed that you should see wont exceed 768KBps.

6 x 1024 = 6144Kbps
6144 / 8 = 768KBps
 
6Mb (Megabit) is slower than 6MB (Megbyte). 8Mb = 1MB. You most likely have 6Mb, and thus if you ever got 1MB a second, that would be pretty impressive!

EDIT: If I hadn't had to talk to someone for the past few minutes, I would have beaten you. Bah!
 
ok so the guide cleared SOME things up, but i still dont understand MY part in all this, what do i have to do?

is says for me to do something with my static ip address, but i have no clue where to find it and then what to do with it

EDIT: also, its kind of hard to know what im suposed to be doing when one guide tells me to read eight other guides which have mini guides in them telling me absolutely nothing that i can comprehend

Well, lets look at this another way. Except for saying you are getting slower than maxium speeds, is the program you are using working? If so, it aint broke don't fix it.

well, for the sake of arguement, it usually works pretty well, and i have seen VERY significant speeds, like 2MBps, however long ago. but now, after i installed vista and changed my router and modem, (same internet tho) this started happening

hehe, I always beat people to things ;)
 
so does anyone know the actual steps i have to take here? i'd really llike to get this sorted out very soon
