Ip address help!

Can someone kindly help me out in understanding ip addresses. What i don't understand is do routers really have their own ip? If i were to unplug my router and connect my computer straight into my modem why do i get a different ip from when its plugged into my router? Also, is it possible to find out where someone lives or their telephone number by their ip or is that just impossible?

the router is essential still using the modem's ip but instead it provides private ip for your other computers so they can share the same connection.
 
Thanks but what i don't understand is does having a router give you a static ip? When i connect directly through my modem the ip address changes everytime i reconnect to the net but it doesnt on my router? I'm talking about the wan ip on the router.

Your computer may have a static IP if thats the way your router is set up, but if you have a dynamic IP setup on your modem and ISP (IP changes every so often), then a router doesnt change that, as the router will just get a new IP whenever the IP has to be renewed.
 
So your saying in order for my to have a static ip i have to set my router that way. But what if my isp is giving me a dynamic ip and i set my router for a static ip does that mean i have a static ip? I just called my isp and they said i have a dynamic ip but it doesn't seem to be dynamic through my router.Sorry lots and lots of confusion but thanks for trying to help me :)

You misunderstood what I was saying. You can have your router give all the computers on the network a static IP, but your external ip (the one that the internet sees), is still dynamic, and theres no way you can change that.
 
Oh yea the networked computer do have a static ip but it seems like my wan connection also does. From what you said that i cannot change that in any way, when i visit a site like ip address.com my the ip that shows up is always the same. Its been months now. If it was dynamic wouldn't it have changed by now?
 
Here's it plain and simple. You will maintain you ip as long as your router is on. The moment you restart it (turn it off then back on) it will connect to a new ip giving you a new ip. This is called dynamic IP.

A static ip is when your ip stays the same even when you turn off/on your router.
