Hello, I've the following question:

Why is there a difference between the two IP-addresses below:
- My IP address at "ipconfig" (windows)
- My IP address at whatismyip.com

Why are above IP addresses not similar?

Thank you,
Dennis.

this is a indepth topic that you may want to google.

whatismyip.com is the ip you are assigned by your internet provider and is like your address on your house no one else in the world has that same address.

ipconfig is the ip of your computers within your home/network

this is kinda like an apartment number there are lots of other people that have the same apartment number but not within your building

so if i send you mail if will go to your address on your building once there the maill man looks at the apartment number and puts it in the right mailbox
same if i send you a packet on the net it goes to you ISP assigned ip and once there it goes to the computer ip.

someone else may be able to explain this better but i would suggest to look it
up.

First of all: thank you for your excellent answer!

I have two other specific questions:

- I would like to block my own visits from my website-visit-counter (I use Google Analytics). Should I block my external IP-address / IP address at whatismyip.com?

- Can I check if I have a dynamic or a static IP address?

Thanx,
Dennis.

external

a - Check with your ISp
b - note your external IP, then disconnect your modem for a few mins (prob 10 mins to ensure you dont pick up the same IP by coincidence) then reconnect and check your external IP again, if they are the same then most likely you have a static IP.

most ISP give a Dynamic IP unless you pay extra for a static IP

you can do as apj101 says and you can find out for sure.
