How important is one's IP address? And is it not prett easy to get someone's IP address? And if you have someone's IP address what is then the worst thing you can do to his computer?

Ones IP is like there address, you know where they are. You can do alot of bad stuff(tho i think it improper to tell you what bad stuff).

Advertisers love ip addresses for sending you a ton of email ads. When you browse a number of different web sites have you noticed the sudden increase in 'JUNK MAIL" that you suddenly find in your email inbox? "SSSPAMM..AATIONNN"! And they know they got you good. They have your "ip address" and can continue to blast your inbox with junk mail. And now for a brief description of just what it is.

"An identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example, 1.160.10.240 could be an IP address.
Within an isolated network, you can assign IP addresses at random as long as each one is unique. However, connecting a private network to the Internet requires using registered IP addresses (called Internet addresses) to avoid duplicates.

The four numbers in an IP address are used in different ways to identify a particular network and a host on that network. Four regional Internet registries -- ARIN, RIPE NCC, LACNIC and APNIC -- assign Internet addresses from the following three classes.

Class A - supports 16 million hosts on each of 126 networks
Class B - supports 65,000 hosts on each of 16,000 networks
Class C - supports 254 hosts on each of 2 million networks
The number of unassigned Internet addresses is running out, so a new classless scheme called CIDR is gradually replacing the system based on classes A, B, and C and is tied to adoption of IPv6.

Advertisers love to send you mail. No doubt about that. Only problem is that they are sending this mail to your EMAIL address. Not your IP. Anytime your email address is used, email address are harvested and mailing list are made up and sold. That is why you get a lot of junk mail etc. All in your inbox. Your IP address is the internet address of your computer on the internet. Hackers love to pick off your IP when you are on line. That is what they use to access your computer. That is why ALL computers should be running a Firewall. It prevents these hackers from accessing your computer.

Yes I agree this thread should be moved to the Security section as that is what we are discussing here.

That has already been requested even though not everything concerning ip addresses is security related. The thread's leader refers to getting an explaination as to purpose as well as to importance.

Well, the reason why I made this thread was to get to know, the security risk you run when you tell your IP address. If that makes any sense.

The IP address acts much like a postal code in that sense where a general location is given out. Automatic emailers for advertisers will "ping" any address detected to see if any spam is opened. If there no activity detected the ip is then disregarded until your email address gets out to spammers. A "ping" is when the entire server is pounded by spam. The best way to get rid of incoming spam is to "do nothing" and delete unless you can block sender and in some cases block the sender's domain.

Hackers also love IP's, that way they can send you virus's or spyware.

And it's very easy for someone to get your IP, if you go to a website the owner of that site can see your IP.

You dont need to be a hacker to get an IP. If you talk to someone on an IM program, if you visit a website, or if you play an online game, it's very easy for someone to get your ip. Infact, the mods and admins here see everyones IP, including yours.

Sending something to an ip address doesn't guarantee anything gets into your inbox since an email address would still be needed. Hackers breach firewalls to gain access to data bases where account information is stored.
