IP Addresses (most likely a simple question for most of you)

I have a question regarding IP addresses. I don't really know much about them so bear with me. When you sign up for a forum such as this, the moderator will know your IP address, correct? Well, what if the person were to go to another state and sign in under the same account? Wouldn't the IP address be different?

when you enter a site or a forum the webmaster usually knows your IP address and it depens of the connection on your pc, so if you change pc in the same stase or in another state, the IP is different...
if you want to know your IP address go to: http://www.myip.it/

Your IP address depends on where you are. Every computer in your house that has the same internet connection wil have the same IP. However, within the network in your house, each computer will have a different IP to identify itself within your network, but your network only has one IP for the rest of the world.

In your own home network, an IP will always be 192.168.x.x.

btw, is that your pic in your avatar? I hope so, cause we need more female members. :D

oh okay
My friend is a moderator of a website and she said it doesn't change. Although, wouldn't the moderator be able to tell when the person's IP address changes or when it stays the same?

There is no way that it could stay the same, different ISPs have different addresses for each of their customers. A different computer in the same house would have the same IP (I think) but a different house would not.

Haha, speak for yourself.:P

Anyways, you have two different Ip addresses when you are behind a router. External and internal. Your external Ip address is what the world sees, and your internal is what your router assigns to each computer (DHCP). Your internal changes but usually stays along the lines of 192.168.X.XXX. Your external Ip address always stays the same however.

Yes, your ip address changes from computer to computer, or router to router.

Hope this helps:D

Okay, thanks guys.
That made a lot of sense.

And what's the age range here? You guys seems wayy smarter than 14, 15 years old.

this is probobly a really stupid question, but is there any way to reset your modem's IP address? I don't mean going into the command prompt and typing ipconfig /release than ipconfig /renew or pulling the power on the modem and router and plugging them back in. My friend got banned from a forum and keeps asking me how to get back on.

BTW, I'm 14, you can see most of the people's ages under their avitars.
