IP addresses

Sorry if this is the wrong section to post this. I am not very computer savy... Anyway I am confused as to how IP addresses work. From my understanding each computer has its own IP address that is transmitted anytime you send an email or anything like that. If someone has different email accounts on yahoo and gmail, will it show the same IP address even though they are using 2 different email routers? I tested this on my own accounts and it showed different IP addresses for each one even though I am using the same computer, my computer. So does each email router have a different IP address? Im confused... If anyone could clear this up Id greatly appreciate it.

yahoo and google mail will show the IP addresses of their servers, so whatever server you are using is the IP that the header will be in.

Thank you for your reply. I am still a little confused. So if I have an account on yahoo and an account on gmail the IP addresses in the emails I send from both accounts will be different from each other? Thank you!

Yes, the Yahoo email will come out of the yahoo servers which have their own IP ranges that is separate from Google. Email is actually not sent from your computer, it is sent from their servers. You are just accessing your email through a web browser.

Oh ok thank you for that information. So then there is no way for someone to track your IP address through emails? Or no way for the avg person to track it, I mean.

If you send an email through a web based email server, ie yahoo, it will get traced back to yahoo. If you want to know how well yahoo protects user information read their EULA when you agree to make the account. General practices are that no company shares your private information. If served a subpoena from the law, they will probably hand it over.
