let me guess, the terminal asks you to specify a password

you start typing some letter on your keyboard

BUT horror of horrors... the letters dont seem to appear on screen

Dont worry that is standard on linux, when entering password you dont see the little **** (or dots) like you do in windows. But dont panic the letters are there you just cant see them OR delete them. What you need to do is type the password slowly dont make any mistakes and press enter at the end. The application will pick up the password just fine.

Do you have experience with linux before. If not this seems a bit of a techy way of doing what is essentially a simple firewall.

excuse the typing... i broke my finger today, and it bloody hurts

Actually, you can delete the letters with that. If you think you typed it wrong, just press backspace several times more than you think you need to.
That's the nice thing about Linux...
At least I hope you are using Linux... I've hardly even heard IP-COP
