IRC on netcat?

I am trying to familiarize myself with all of netcat's possibilities, so I'm starting with something I'm a bit familiar with (never having been a network admin or hacker extraordinaire or anything) - IRC.

How do I use netcat for IRC?

And what are other simple, useful(to me) applications for this program?
