Is 2 GB RAM better then 2.5 GB RAM (No this isn't a typo)?

My Tecra Notebook has 2 slots. I upgraded from from 1GB to 2.5 GB by adding a 2.0 GB stick to an existing 512 stick and sold the other 512 stick. I realize its preferred having matching memory but according to the salesman I spoke with about buying other memory from his store for a different computer, I would have been better off with 2 1gb sticks of RAM then a 2.0 and 512 stick because the 2.0GB of matching RAM will make my notebook run faster then 2.5 GB of nonMatching RAM. Is this true?

It depends what spec the 512MB RAM module was. If you have two sticks of different speed RAM sticks in a computer, the faster RAM will slow itself down and run at the slower speed of the other RAM stick.

Also - things like Dual Channel comes into play.

:)

Leave it... keep the 2.5... Like Rambo said dual channel also helps alot... if your laptop does not have Dual Channel then 1 stick might help an tiny bit.

Sorry I Should Mention that its a Core 2 Duo

THe notebook is Core 2 Duo So I should leave things as is & not "downgrade" to sticks of 1GB each. Conversely, if I added another 2 GB stick, giving me 4GB of RAM, I wouldn't notice much of a difference for what I use the computer for-
No gaming or graphics just mainly web and downloading torrents & burning. Is that basically correct? Thanks

Since it's not for gaming I wouldn't worry bout it. You don't need 4GB for that stuff. XP and 512MB should be sufficient... Yes just keep your RAM for right now.

Ski Dude I don't Understand Your Reply, Please Elaborate

My Tecra A8 is a Core 2 Duo. There are 2 Memory slots, 4GB MAX total. One slot currently has 512GB, the other slot 2GB, total 2.5 GB. If I don't do gaming or graphics, just basic computer stuff, will I really notice my notebook running faster if: 1. I "downgrade" to 2 sticks of 1GB each, total of 2 GB instead of the present 2.5 GB. or alternatively, 2. I add another 2GB stick and put 2GB in each slot, 4GB altogether? I really don't want to spend the money if its not going to make a noticeable difference to me for what I use the laptop for.
