Is 3 gigs of ram a waste?

i had 4 but one failed. Is it stupid to keep 3 gigs in there as strange of a question this is my reasoning is this.. Is it better to keep the ram dual channeled or does the one extra gig actually help you think?

Windows XP only registers about 3GB of RAM anyways. I think a little more than that. Maybe like 3.2GB.

It's different for everyone. Even if the OS can't see all of the 4gb it can still use all of it.

To actually answer the main question. 2gb of dual channel would probably be better than if you didn't have dual channel.
