Is 4gb ram really needed?

Is 4gb really needed for a gaming build. What kind of differences would you see running 2gb compared to 4gb in todays games, performance wise?
 
If the application and OS actually support 64 bit memory addressing, then yes it could make a difference. To my knowledge very little games take full advantage of 64bit architecture, so you would need to research the game on an individual basis to see if it works.
 
I recently upgraded from 2 to 4, and I have noticed no difference.

PS, I have 32 bit so only 3.3GB is being used. However, I would still assume there is not a difference.

However, RAM is so cheap that I would just get 4GB's just in case future stuff does use more than 2GB's.
