Is a physics card really necessary?

Title says it all. Is a physics card really necessary with a dual core processor and a geforce 8800 gtx? Becides, if I eventualy run in SLI mode I'm not sure I will have the space on my mobo for it anyways...haha, so I suppose it's a simple question, is a physics card necessary?

PS: not sure what topic this was supposed to go under, so MOD's feel free to move, thanks.

In my opinion, no. There's only a few games that support the card, and from what I've seen, it doesn't make a huge difference in gameplay. I just don't see it being worth it.

I was going to get one but then looking at the mobo. if i were to get a sound card or a wifi card there' no room for it lol i'll probably get it when they release the pci express edition.

i would actualy buy one because i think soon more games will require one like cellfactor revolution does already.

i hear you can only play 2 maps on Cellfactor without PPu so it is needed.

It's worthless. I have one and there are only a select few games that support it, but you can barely notice the difference with and without one. So I would say no, dont get it.

personally i would say the creation of the 8800 vid card and SLi have trumped the need for a physics card

and 1 game doesn't justify the need (to the millions that don't play that game) to buy one

It depends on your build also, i mean with your build i doubt there's a need for one. But for a lesser build with a less potent CPU / GPU I'm sure that it would help alot on games like JTF and other PPu compatible games.

for the price of the physics card you could upgrade your computer

ok thanks for all the help guys. For now I think I will skip the physics card. Here is my plan for when I need more power.... Upgrade to SLI 8800 GTX's from my single GTX now, upgrade to quadcore, then upgrade to 8 gigs 1200mhz ddr2 from my current 4 gigs of 800mhz ddr2. But i'm also assuming I wont need these upgrades for at least a year...

ps: i'm on vista 64 home premium
