Is Asus laptops any good?

Asus is one of the top board manufacturers to begin with there. The drawback is the 14" viewable screen while other laptops see 15" or larger like the Asus A7C-7S005M seen at http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=262632&prodlist=nextag

For the slight price difference between the model at the link and the one you are looking over at newegg you go from a 14.1" to 17" viewable screen as well as going from a 120gb 5,400rpm ide drive to a 5,400rpm sata seen there. Both have Core 2 Duo cpus while the model with the larger screen has a slightly slower 1,83ghz model compared to the 2ghz seen in the model at newegg. Both are Asus.

hey names are not always something to go by.
i think its what makes up the product rather than the name on the product

spec wise, is it good for the price? im looking into 12-14" ones. any draw backs that you guys can see?

It depends mainly on what you plan on doing with a laptop. Most manage to spend some time gaming. While that model edges by with the slightly faster model cpu the specifications are similar to another Asus model seen in the same price range. The other model offers a dvd burner instead of dvd read only drive and a larger screen. Both will run 2gb of the same memory.

A better price for that model was seen at http://www.btotech.com/store/products/laptops/ensemble/a8j/A8JS-4S024C.htm

Depends on what you want to do with it. The go7700 is the best graphics card that a laptop of that screen size can accommodate, so graphics wise your set. Hard drive is a nice size, at 120 gb. Processor is nice as well. Also the number of ports (5) is a help as well. But maybe two things that are a drawback is that it has a short battery life, and their is no bluetooth. (they might have changed the bluetooth with a later model).

As for Asus being reliable, check out a few threads on what the A8JS owners have to say:

And a full review can be found here:

hope some of this helps. Also, if its worth anything, I am considering the G1 as my notebook of choice. You are going for the smaller screens, but its worth a look :)
