Is core duo fast enough?

2 years ago I bought a laptop with a p4 3.0 ghz, and thanks to a combination of Best Buy employee stupidity, a 3 year warrantee, my computers idea to fry its own motherboard and take everything else with it, and my keeping all the repair order paperwork, BEST BUY IS GIVING ME A NEW LAPTOP. I could not care less about battery life or weight, all I want is whatever processor will get done what I want done fastest, and multitasking is a big point too. I was wondering how the centrino core duo were, I think most of best buys are 1.66ghz. I don't want to get a new laptop and realize that all it is good for is battery life, since mine is plugged in 99.9999% of the time it is used. If anyone has suggestions about what I should get please feel free to respond.

Best Buy is giving me one around my originals price range, which was $1500

The 1.66Ghz Core Duo is very fast for it's speed, and is also a dual core. However don't expect it to outperform you're P4 3Ghz in all tasks. And it does have better battery life, but you said that doesnt matter much.

but dual core is excellent for funning many programs at once and it should do that better than the p4

The core duo is a very fast processor; The worst idea anyone ever thought of was to put a hot desktop processor into the confined space inside a notebook.
I work for acer and you wouldn't believe the number of P4 based system we get that have managed to completely dry out the thermal paste and are now trying to cook themselves.
