Is HDMI input essential?

Hello,
I am shopping for a monitor for my husband's Christmas present. I would like a 24" or 27" IPS monitor and am taking a liking to the new HP's recently rolled out. My question is importance of having a HDMI input. THe 27" hp 2740w does not while the 24" hp 2440w does. My husband just bought a dell XPS machine with a blue ray dvd included and has a HD video camera for shooting. He uses the machine primarily for video editing. I am no expert so am looking for advice on the importance of a HDMI input...is it a must have? Many thanks !
 
Is the Dell a laptop?

The difference between HDMI and DVI would be it carries sound. It is a lot more convenient hooking up to, say, a TV. If the monitor doesn't have speakers, there would be really no point versus the traditional outputs on the laptop.

And if the monitors do have speakers, you could plug the HDMI and get sound through them, but I would never use the speakers on a monitor because of sound quality.
 
^^^ She can have hd with DVI, as far as i know (correct me if i am), dvi and hdmi can both go upto and over hd resolution (720/1080)

Its only vga to my knowledge that cant.

And in the past year i dont think iv seen a new pc/laptop without a hdmi slot tbh.

I haven't seen any with a dvi slot, just vga and from my experiance vga limits the resolution you can use.

@OP I would make sure what connection you husband has, if its dvi then i would go for that, if he only had hdmi i wouldn't settle for less as you wont get the most out of the monitor as vga isnt the best to use.
 
HDMI and DVI both will do HD. So it really doesnt matter. What kind of output connector does his computer have? If it just has DVI he can use either monitor without a adaptor because both have DVI. If he has a HDMI and DVI output connector he can use the ZR 2440w with either.
 
Okay, thank you to all! The video card does have a HDMI slot. It is a desktop not a laptop. So if I understand correctly he can get HD on the monitor using the DVI input. It has a dual link DVI, displayport 1.2 and hdmi along with VGA. I am learning as I go and just looked up the specs on his video card and looks like the max resolution w/HDMI is 1920 x 1200 where as the DVI has a max at 2560 x 1600...and the 27" monitor I'm looking at has a resolution of 2560 x 1400. I wasn't really aware of differences between DVI and HDMI so thank you for your response!!
 
Both DVI and HDMI are High Def connections. Only question for me would be does he ever plan to hook other items to his monitor? Such as Blueray or Xbox?

If he will use other items, go with HDMI. If not, get the larger 27".
