Is it an upgrade?

Hi, I was thinking of upgrading an old machine I've got laying around, the one listed in my tag and was wondering from a pentium 4 3.2ghz, would a pentium dual-core e2220 2.4ghz be an upgrade? is the e2220 even a dual core? the only ones I know of are the core 2 duo's. If anyone knows if there's a significant gap between the p4 3.2 and e2220 to call it even an upgrade in terms of performance, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am reading that you are wanting to use your old motherboard and put a Pentium E2220 to upgrade your system. From what I read at the below website the Pentium E2220 is not even compatible with your motherboard.

Take a look at the Pentium E6300 Dual-Core processor.

Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale Dual-Core (2.8 gigahertz) processor - $83

The Pentium E processor series has a lot more processing power than the Pentium 4 series of processors.

the e6300 would be a HUGE upgrade from your p4, ghz isn't everything now, its is the advances in archetiture and the cache size also play pretty good roles in the performance of cpu's. But I would go with the e6300, that would be a night and day difference.

Oops, my error. The Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz) processor is compatible with your motherboard. The Pentium E6300 (2.8 gigahertz) processor is not. Do not buy the Pentium E6300 processor that I gave you a link to. Good catch.

OoOo nice catch, thank you so much :) and thank you for all those who replied, all the info was much appreciated.
