Is it dead?

Ok so after I freid my 3 year old stock mobo, I got this beauty, GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H, dual bios, superb onboard vid plus it'll crossfire with any copatible card like the Radeon HD 4770 I got which is too sweet. Got it home put it in and...nothin; no display, all the fans come on, hard drive make a little bit of noise, vid card fan kinda revs over an over like a loop, I can even pop open the cd drive but then it closes as soon as it opens. And reading the reviews on newegg, I guess there are more than a few DOA's with this particular board.

Should I just assume it IS DOA an send it back? I took the RAM out, no beeps; I unhooked all I could and kept trying with no change...no display, no orange thinking light on the hard disk.

This was my first time upgrading so I'm not sure about alot of stuff...it's a learning experience. Is there a telltale sign of a dead board??

Did you plug everything in right when you put the new mobo in? Put the stand-offs in right? The 20/24 pin power connector too?

what power supply are you using? Did you make sure it can handle such an upgrade? Video cards are almost always the biggest drain on a power supply's...power supply :P

I do believe, followed the manual to a tee. Like I said though this was really the first time I've been inside the case so I'm definately a noob upgrading or building...what's a stand-off? Yup it's powered all good...if it wasn't would it come on at all?

I'm using an OCZ 600w Modular...I needed it so I could upgrade. I'm pretty sure I've got power to spare; but I did try it with the vid card out too.

Are there any standoffs?

Ok so I looked up standoffs, and I don't specifically see any, though the last mobo was fine until I fried it, there were none built onto the bottom.

Is it possible the case didn't have any?, or since it's lifted from the bottom of the case by that insert is that acting in place of a "standoff? This is the info for my Compaq Presario SR2177CL Desktop PC. I took a pic too:

Your case has built in standoffs/risers. Just make sure there is not any risers under the board that doesnt match the screw holes in the board, if so it will ground out on the bottom. If it does just put a piece of eletrical tape over it.

those are built in risers but my case has that and I still was able to put standoffs on that just for some extra protection

Ok thanks, thats what I thought. So is there really no sure fire way to tell if the mobo is bad as opposed to another issue?

You said (I fried my 3 year old stock mobo). What happen to start with? Are you sure it was the motherboad in the first place? Have you tried the onboard by itself?

Well it's a bit of a story to be found in the thread here. Basicly I guess I wasn't grounded and "zapped" it. Actually I'm really not sure it was the motherboard, I'm just going from what the guy I paid to tell me I fried it said; I mean I hope it was the board otherwise I put myself through alot of trouble for nothing.

"Onboard"? You mean the vid card? ya I've tried it with the bare essentials to the complete rig, same results...no display, no boot, but all the fans, even the vid card fan, so the power IS flowing through it.

If it's not the motherboard I have no idea what it could be. How would I go about finding out?

You have the 24pin power and the 8 pin power connectors hooked up right? The 8pin powers the cpu and if it is not getting power then the fans are about the only thing that will come on.. so I would remove the heatsink and check and see if the cpu is even getting warm when turned on and if not then try one these cables.. If you place a finger on the cpu then turn it on and if it statrts to gets warm immedialty pull the power plug!!!

All the cables are good, and I can't really check the cpu as it's very attached to the heat sink; when I removed the heat sink from the old mobo the cpu came with it and it's not comin off without force...is that normal? Do some cpu's(especially with bundles) come attached to the heat sink? Could the cpu be the problem?...I mean I doubt it as everything was groovy until I put the RAM in the old board without grounding.

wow so you forced the cpu into the socket..?? No the cpu is not normally attached to the cooler. The thermal paste has it somewhat glued to it and very carefully should be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled with new thermal paste... you could have bent the pins on the cpu if you forced into the socket... I think you should remove it if this is the case...

ok it states am2 which should work with this board..

By onboard, I mean your onboard video. The motherboard you bought has built in onboard video too.

Well from the first post in the other thread. Dont take out or install any hardware with it just shut down. Unplug it and hit the power button a few times to discharge it. A ATX power supply has power going through the board even shut down. Not saying thats what happen, just letting you know.

You said you replaced the power supply when you upgraded, have you tried booting it with the old power supply just using the onboard video? Just a thought to check the power supply.

Plus you said the heatsink was stuck to the CPU. Did you have to pull (Without lifting the CPU socket Lever) the CPU out of the socket. If so look at the pins on the CPU and make sure you didnt pull any out.

Ok so I went and actually got the cpu off the heat sink...I thought that since the cpu came off with the heat sink it was meant to be that way...plus it took some force to get it off. Anyway I put it in, locked it down and tried to boot to see if I got heat...oh ya, scary hot, thought I killed it. Put the heat sink back on and pushed the button...wouldn't you know the freakin thing booted up, seriously I so freaking happy. I don't know what I did, I don't know if it was EVER the mobo but I really like my new one.

So thanks guys so much for helpin me out with this, if it wasn't gonna work I was RMA'n it tomorrow. Still I can't do much tonight, I need to go out and buy a tube of thermal paste...who cares though I'm just exstatic. Anybody know where I can locally get the paste without waiting for something to ship?
