is it going to die?

Hey folks,

I have an ancient (9 year old) toshiba satellite a100 laptop that was running xp pro for years. Is been increasingly sluggish lately despite reformatting and reloading windows so I tried putting Ubuntu 14 on it. I used to run Ubuntu Jaunty jackalope on it a couple years ago and it worked perfectly, but now it's almost slow motion watching the internet open a page.

it's not a software issue obviously. Could it be the processor or the ram is on its last leg? It seems to be running hotter than normal too, I was thinking about reflashing the processor and applying new thermal paste, would that help?

I'd run both memtest86+ for RAM and Seatools for the hard drive. You can get both of these in an easy bootable disk like the Ultimate Boot CD here: https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

In a laptop the hard drive is almost always the first component to 'go'.

CPU thermal paste sounds like a good idea, a lot of the laptop coolers use those pink thermal pads that really suck.
