Is it important to turn the computer off from time to time?

Is it healthier for the computer to be shut off for a certain amount of time every day rather than to leave it running 24/7?

If so, how long should I leave it turned off for each day?

I leave mine on if i'm home or just running errands here in town. As long as its not warm in the room you should be fine just leaving it on and let the computer go to sleep or hibernate if you want.

I leave my personal tower computer on 24/7, just let the monitor turn off when not in use. At work, I have dozens of computers that are left on 24/7. No ill effects. The computer won't be effected, only your electric bill.

Just saying how i do it. Ive never had a problem with any of my computers leaving on all day. I do think it should be off sometime. not 24 hrs a day 7 days a week and on. give it a break.

I find that the longer you keep your system on the more problems are caused in Windows. On other forums I've been on some people had weird problems after leaving their machines on for days and days and days on end (crashes and stuff like that) and most of the time it was fixed with a reboot. So I would always recommend rebooting once in a while if you intend to leave the PC running for days on end.

I have a feeling they were using older versions of Windows such as XP though, so maybe the newer versions can 'cope' better.

As for the hardware getting damaged, so long as nothing is running extortionately hot then you should be OK. Computer hardware is generally designed to be run for long periods of time.

And your electricity bills? You'll barely notice a difference because PCs only consume as much power from the wall as they need. Assuming that whilst you are asleep and/or whilst you are aware from your PC, it will be idle, it'll be consuming a minimal amount of power and so your bills will not go up by any noticeable amount. Obviously if the CPU is always running at 100% and it's doing heavy stuff 24/7 then yeah obviously it's consuming more power and your bills will go up.

It only takes a few seconds for my PCs to boot and shut down with SSDs so there is no reason not to shut it down when I'm not using it because they're so quick to boot up again.

Usually though I have a similar system to Tremmor where I boot my desktop up in the morning, use it and leave it on for most of the day and then shut it off when I go to bed in the evening. I only tend to leave it on overnight if I am downloading something from the internet that is taking a while or if I leave it on to render a video overnight. My PC sits in my bedroom and is a bit noisy so I prefer to turn it off at night.

If the computer is going to be on 24/7, it will be fine to leave it on without rebooting. It's more of a personal preference to reboot from time to time, as it closes out all programs that are running in the background that may not completely close out unless you kill the process or reboot, but the gains are minimal. Servers that are on 24/7 rarely have issues from being on constantly. If you're asking if you should leave it on 24/7 instead of turning it off, absolutely not, turn it off whenever you are going to be away from it for a while. Save electricity.

You have to keep in mind that you'll need to reboot for some updates to install themselves. :)

Computers really don't care either way. You could make an argument for hard drive spin-up wear over time through power on or MTBF hours being used on 24/7 components but neither are really that great of an impact on your usability.

If you don't need it on for anything you can save some power/money by using sleep or turning it off. If there are tasks you need completed like an excessively long defrag or some sort of downloads then by all means have at it.

There's no 'your PC needs at least 8 hrs of sleep per day' type of situation as per people or similar.
