It's ok to put faster memory in - but you can't run it at faster speeds. for example maximum that motherboards support is ddr400 (pc3200). overclockers buy faster memories (like pc4200), because they are better at overclocking.

they aren't better at overclocking, they run underclocked at 400 then by OCing the FSB to say 266 you aren't straining the RAM so it can run at default voltages
