Is it OK to keep my laptop plugged in 24/7?

I have a fairly new laptop. Would it decrease the battery life? I rarely take it outside. It's easier just to keep it plugged in. Thanks.

You should not have it run constantly off of electrical power. You'll wear your power adapter out quicker plus most chargers get really hot while charging. Others may disagree but the battery needs a proper charge and discharge cycle. When its dead, plug it in. When its fully charged, unplug it until it almost totally dead again.

Thanks for your reply. I have a few questions. Is it OK to just unplug it from the laptop other than the outlet?

I removed the battery from my laptop. The battery cover is mounted onto the battery. Is there a way I could detach the two, so I could put the cover back onto the back of the laptop? I really don't think that the battery slot back would be assembled together. Maybe I'm wrong. This is my first laptop. Thanks.

i agree with johnb35. One thing though. Depending on the quality of your laptop. Read the instructions for charging and see what it says. the idea of taking out the battery makes sense. On the other hand you might have a smart charger. it knows when to stop charging. read the instructions for the manual for long life of the battery or you will boil it and burn it out before ya even use it for long periods. it can kill a battery.

The idea of a laptop is to be portable, not to be stuck by a power cord. Like I said you only want it to be plugged in when you are charging the battery. What happens when the power goes out and you don't have the battery attached to the laptop? You will lose anything you are working on.

Is it safe to just take the battery out and run it all the time?

I have a different issue but it's basically that my gateway mx6920 runs fine on battery OR on AC wall power but when the battery is installed AND the ac charger is plugged in...the screen flashes??

If I take the battery out, and just run on the charger...it runs fine.

I replaced the battery and power jack on motherboard. I'm pretty sure it's not the charger because the laptop will charge up fine as long as it's off and it runs fine on just the charger with no battery.

I know this sounds like a weird issue but I pretty much always have access to a wall outlet but just need to be able to move my laptop from work to home.

Is it safe to just run on wall power w/o the battery?

Thank you,

Donnie

I would say safe, yes. That will probably burn out your power cord quickly though, as they are built to charge the battery, not make your laptop a desktop. Although, I admit, I typically leave my laptop on, plugged in, with or without the battery in it.

BK.

Thanks man. I don't mind buying a charger again if I have to..

I just want to make sure I can't ruin the computer if it all of the sudden shuts off due to power loss???

I've been running it with and without the battery and plugged in for periods of 72 hours or more straight w/o problems.

It's just now it's acting funny with the battery installed when it's plugged it so it's way easier to just charge up the battery, then take it out and run the laptop on AC power.

Then if I need it mobile, I just pop the battery in and make sure to shut the laptop off and take it out before plugging in the charger and running the computer.

I guess basically my computer has to be off to charge the battery for some reason??

Sudden loss of power with the laptop on and battery removed can cause hard drive damage and other issues. I highly recommend having the battery attached to the laptop.

Well, I'm screwed then. lol.

I'm gonna have to chance it though sometimes. I mean right now it runs fine with the battery installed and all hooked up...

It's really weird, it's like I can shut the computer down, install the battery, keep laptop off and plug in...it will start charging like normal. Let charge, start up and it runs fine, even if I leave it plugged in.

Where the problem arises is if I try and plug it in once it's already running with the a battery installed.

It will just barely flash the screen and the charging light flashes as if it's charging for a second and stopping/charging/stopping/charging/stopping etc...

So then if I shut the computer down, unplug and replug the charger back it...it will start charging fine...then I can start the laptop up and run it plugged in with the battery installed...

Until I go to unplug/replug...the whole process starts over.

Like I said, I replaced the charging jack, bought a new gateway(not knock off) battery and charger about 2 years ago.

I just don't think it's the charger...but don't know what else it could be..

That was gonna be my next question...

I thought that's why you had a bios battery on a laptop or something but I'm no computer expert so I will go with what the senior members say..

The bios battery is just to store info such as time and date, and certain settings. And don't be afraid to ask questions. Lol.

has a surge protector and battery backup built in with several receptacles.
its enough time to shut down during a power loss and will protect during a lightening strike if it did enter your home power. i have 3 Belkins and might try pluggin in the laptop. might be smart. One thing though. Nothing portable about it. its a suitcase. But good for 20 amp.

I set em up on the floor a plug em in and call it a day. Don't loose power though and maybe twice in 30 yrs. everything is underground in my area. no power cables above ground. i did do this several years ago. thats what i do.
Protect my monitors, computers or what ever. its called insurance.

Really? I bet somewhere, you could find a semi-portable one. But yeah I know what you mean. I just looked at the pics and they are bigger than I thought. (We just have surge protectors, or use regular outlets for ours)

Thank you guys.

I'll go ahead and look into one of these UPS...it should at least be good to maybe have one at home and another that I can leave in my office to just plug up to and never really use the battery unless I'm mobile.

Take care and thank you for the responses,

Donnie
