Is it ok to swap MOBO after installing OS

I built a PC, installed XP, and later decided to change the mobo

Is it just a matter of swapping the mobo from one to the other, or is there more to it?

that would depend on the chipset in the motherboard... if the chipsets are EXACTLY the same model you should be fine. I did it when i was running my Athlon XP system, both motherboards had nForce 2 chipsets and it worked fine.
 
When i decided to upgrade my mobo after i had a bunch of programs and stuff installed on it. After i installed the new mobo, the computer just froze at the loading screen. It turned out that i had to reformat for the new mobo to work. I dont think you can just upgrade a mobo without reformating your hd, but im not positive. Just backup your data and install it (and be ready incase you have to reformat).
 
Uhm. I've never had an issue with switching Mobo's, even when they had different chipsets. Never had a bad affect on me.
 
Everything will be affected by messed up mobo drivers, i suggest a reinstall when changing such a vital part. :)
 
I've moved OS harddrives to different PCs, this would be pretty much the same idea... I've never had a problem. Granted, I never did it as a permanent situation... I always did a clean reformat eventually...
 
Sometimes you can get away with such a core change, sometimes you cant. Even when you can, its more than ideal to reinstall the OS anyways :)
 
i couldnt agree more.
because when you install windows, it scans your hardware and put the settings of windows acoording to the hardware it scans. if a other mobo has nearly the same settings for the hardware, you can get away with it. (but the chanse that you get the error " windows has recovered from a serious error" on startup is pretty big.) cuz some settings dont match.
so reinstalling is the best way.
