is it possible/likely to infect from virus by executing video-format file?

I have downloaded a couple of video file, they are *.mkv or *.mp4. The video does not play, I have also tried the most universal player like VLC but they do not play at all (no screen, no sound, no progress of timeline). I guess they are probably fake video.

I'd like to know if it's possible or likely that those files contain virus?

Or is it virus mostly likely to be in EXE only (for downloaded files)?

You can get infected from other formats besides exe. How large are the video files? It's more likely that the videos you downloaded are just corrupt.
