Is it possible to continue to use XP SP3 going forward

I have been very happy with the performance of my desktop the last 5 years using XP. The reason I don't want to upgrade is becaus I use a software called Paperport 9 for business and can't do without it. Reports of people using the newer version of Paperport that are compatible with 7 and 8 are not good.

Also, have been noticing lately that XP is having issues. For example, I can't upgrade IE8 and some websites that I visit are asking for me to use Firefox or Chrome. For various reasons I want to stay with IE. Thank you for any feedback you can give me.

Sincerely,
Frank

Yes, you can continue to use XP. But with internet services you'll start to notice issues. IE8 is as high as you can go with XP, and even that is unsupported by Microsoft as well. Even if you upgraded to another browser, they may some day not support XP anymore.

You could always upgrade to Windows 7 Professional and use XP mode to run your Paperport software.

Thanks Voyagerfan, That seems like an excellent soution. Can you go into a little more detail how I would do that or point me to a tutorial on the subject.

Firefox and Pale Moon work for me on my netbook running XP Home SP3. I wouldn't use IE at all since it's vulnerable.

Like what was mentioned you could try compatibility mode for the app you want to use in Windows 7. You do this by right clicking the icon on the desktop and chose properties.

I run old XP only software and it all works in compatibility for XP SP2 in Windows 7.

Thanks Agent, what icon would that be?

The Paperport 9 icon on the desktop if you install it to Windows 7.

You could try this in a virtual machine before you commit to install. If you want to try that let me know and I can tell you how to do it. A virtual machine is like having another OS on the same OS to try things out in.

I wasn't really blown away when I installed Windows 7 coming from XP. It has a learning experience to know how to configure and find some stuff, but it takes about a week if not less to learn all the ins and outs.

What will really blow you away is a SSD. LOL On XP though the TRIM command is not supported so garbage collection won't work to its full potential on a SSD. But you could use XP on a SSD. Come to think about it. I think, although I could be wrong that the Samsung Magician software could implement the TRIM command on XP if you have a Samsung SSD drive. Not too sure about that one. I think other SSDs have their software too.

I've been using Xp sp3 and Xubunu14 on a Dell Dem p4 and i installed Google Chrome and so far it's been all good, but you have to disable the Win Software updates,i only use Xp for program that don't run on Linux and video streaming ,for most Surfing i use Linux,i also was lucky cause i found in the dumpster a Dell Dem Win Xp installation Cd, installed it on my Dell Dem P4 and it is a clean install without all that software advertising Crap that the dealers put on their installs,it makes a huge deference in boot speed and system operation over all.

Also i have a Sony Vaio centrino Pentium M 1 GB mem that came from the Dealer with XP installed,i was able to install Sp2 and Sp3, and i use it the same way as the Dell Dem P4 with Xubuntu and Win Xp with dual boot, but in this case if i have to use it wireless i have to use XP, since Xubuntu 12.04 can't set wireless with Wep secure settings, cause this Pentium M is not PAE so i can't upgrade to xubuntu 14.04 which is PAE which works wireless with no problem, so this where Win XP comes handy.
