Is it possible to find out what type of ram you got externally?

Externally? I'm not quite sure I follow that, but if you mean by not looking in the case, yeah, for sure. You can use Everest, Sisoft Sandra or Belarc.
 
I do have external RAM actually. I set it on top of my case. Only problem is that I can't get the BIOS to detect it. I think I have to flash it.
 
Most RAM sticks have a sticker on it, that may tell you the speed, voltage, timings, manufacturer, among other things.
