Is it possible to have comcast internet and a satellite provider?

I live in a house with the person I rent from. The internet modems and what not are downstairs. I get very poor signal and comcast seems to limit your bandwidth when a lot of people are on and my speed drops very drastically.

Is it possible I can get some other high speed internet service of my own? I have one cable outlet in my room and it has a cable coming out the outlet and I'm assuming it's already buzzing with comcast.

Please let me know what my options are.

Thank you !!

My neighbor has satellite tv and comcast internet. they will charge a little more because ya didn't get the cable tv also. I did the same years ago also. its available.

You'd seriously be better off considering any other means than satellite.

You could also get another Comcast plan/modem that would tie into that coax line but be your own account.

Are you sure the performance isn't due to weak signal and/or local utilization? How much bandwidth do they pay for anyway?

That's not Comcast, that is either due to other people in your house using the internet, or you have a poor signal that fluctuates causing your speed to dip. Your best and cheapest bet is to upgrade the wireless network in your house, either with a better router, moving the existing router to a more central location, or using a network extender.

Why you would want satellite internet is beyond me. The speeds are much slower, significantly higher latency, lower bandwidth caps, and more expensive.

If you insist on getting your own internet, just get your own Comcast service. You can have more than one service in the same house if you really want to pay for two services.

First of all, since you're a renter, you need to ask the owner if they will let you do it. If they're OK with you doing it, then there is nothing to prevent you from calling Comcast and having a second service brought into the house for your exclusive use. Of course you would be responsible for any costs incurred.

To answer your question, yes, you can have multiple methods of internet access such as cable & satellite, no problem.

In the early days of satellite, the satellite link was download only so, in addition to the satellite connection, I had to also have a separate dial-up connection for the uplink. When I clicked on a link, the request was sent via the 56K modem then the actual web content was streamed down from the satellite. It was clunky but it worked.

Having a second modem from Comcast wouldn't require you ask the owner...
He should contact them, as Comcast will have to come in for the install. It should be a simple plug and play install, but they may be wondering why Comcast is in their house.

If any holes need to be drilled or cables run thru walls, etc... then the owner will need to give permission unless you have a rental agreement that already gives permission for these types of installations.

Read people he already has a cable outlet in his room! No drilling needed.
Having two services on existing wiring is definitely possible, however it depends on the signal level and quality at the end point. If the service does not have the quality needed for two services, a new line would need to be brought in. It's possible Comcast would also need to see the service entrance and possibly replace splitters with higher quality ones to improve the signal, which would require the owners consent.
