Hi new here but not to pc's, i was wondering is it possible to run your pc using legal free software ie open office, AVG Antivirus etc etc and have peace of mind or would you be at risk somewhere, (you only get what you pay for sort of thing)

You could be at piece of mind! Avast pro is good and is free for life if you just renew your reg code every 16months. Open Office is fairly good too. Most of the apps I have are open source.

as long as you dont get "free" software from janky sites. sites like http://majorgeeks.com/ and http://www.download.com/ check the software is free of anything bad. plus they have reviews and ranks.

Another good site is pcworld's downloads section. They have thousands of downloads of free stuff and most if it is great stuff. Always do research before downloading any free stuff!! Always!!

There are a lot of free programs that are just smaller versions of the paid version.
