is it possible..

Yeah, elmarcorulz is right, this is the first I've ever heard about carputers, and it's the first time I have even seen that word on this forum...

Carputers are an interesting idea, but they draw far too much power and are very impractical. You could only really use it when you were not in motion (in fact the vehicle would have to be in Park), as laptops and other computer-like accessories are covered under the cellular phone laws in most states, banning their use while driving.

who would be dumb enough to drive while trying to type on a laptop?

not a laptop, i think he means likea desktop in a car. I actually was thinking about that a few days ago, it wouldnt be hard at all to do. Just get a power inverter (say 1000watts to be on the safe side), put your desktop on a seat, under the seat, floor, ect, then put the LCD monitor wherever you want to, and there you go! if your stuck at a red light you can play some counter strike :P

css at a red light? how long do they stay on for?!?

you could put a really decent laptop mounted into the dashboard then the passenger can play it. or control things from it. oh, and a really long range wireless internet adaptr would be shithot too

Right. Play CS at a red light that lasts for about 30 - 45 seconds, when it takes that long for the "Preparing to play Counter Strike..." box to have just dissapearred, since the only way to get a carputer running that's not going to overheat the interior of the car will have to be relatively low powered (not to mention, again, the draw on your battery). Where would the monitor go? How would you mount a keyboard/mouse? Oh, and don't forget the wireless internet you'd need...$80 a month for a half-broadband PCMCI card for wireless internet anywhere there isn't major radio interference. Let's not think inside the box too much, let's get some UV lighting in there, maybe four or five cold cathode tubes and lots of pretty UV reactive wiring harnesses for the molexes and whatnot. Ohh, let's not forget to get a new set of wiring harnesses for the stereo, too, so you can hear "HEADSHOT!" in resounding clarity on your car speakers, just before ramming your car up a tree because you were blinded by the case lighting.

Eye dee ten tee.

and what about when you're going to a LAN-party?
i mean.. then you put your pc into your car, to move it there.. ( ok, nvm) :P

that would give new meaning to wardriving :D

Very nice play-on-words Cromewell...

Anyway, people have XBOXs and Playstations... so its only fitting that playing computer games in the car is the next step... (as long as your not a loner, your friends can play the games while you drive... or while your sitting in the college parking lot waiting for class to begin because you had to get to the parking lot an hour earlier to get a good spot..)

I watched something awhile ago where to groups of kids played a LAN XBOX game from two seperate cars... they went on a near empty straightaway and took a long cable and threw it from one car to another and played a few minutes of (I think) HALO.... while going at least 40 MPH...

This is actually something I've been thinking about doing since my seinor year of high school, and now I'm am going a head with it. I've got everything layed out the way I want it now. I've got a good couple pics drawn up now with where everything goes, and where to run the wires. I know how I'm going to mount the screen, in the front of the car, with the DVD rom and other things, For the mouse and keyboard I found a small keyboard and gyro mouse to use. Most of the guts of the system will be in the trunk, with a cooling system, just in case. Right now the only problem I'm having is wireing the screen. I'd rather use the screen that the laptop came with, because it's much slimmer then any other screen I could find. It's only about 3 pounds, so it's very light weight, making it mountable in the fashion I want it mounted. I've tried to extend the cable it came with, but I've already ruined this cable. Right now, this is the last thing thats holding me back. I'm using a Gateway M275 laptop for this. I need a way to have the screen up front, while having the rest of it in the trunk. Everything else is done now.
