Is It Too Hot?

Hey everyone,
I was just wondering what a safe temp. is for a Intel P4 540J 3.0 GHz Processor. On the ASUS tmp. reader thing, it keeps saying it is overheating by a couple degrees. I have an ASUS P5GD1. What is a temp. that is just too hot and unsafe for the CPU?
Thanks a ton,
Derek

70+c anything thats over that is bad sign. are you using stock cooling? you might need to add better compounds or invest in a aftermarket cooling. are you playing games when it overheats?

So I just checked, and just idling is about 55 degrees celcius. I have gotten it up to about 76 Degrees celcius...That doesn't sound right. It is the fan that came with it, and I was just playing a game.
Thanks,
Derek

55c is a considered a pretty high temp , but its prolly alright, you might wanna try getting it down into the 40's....76c??? its a wonder it didn't shut it self down or restart...you might wanna try getting another temp porgram or go have a look in the bios;)

if temp problems persist the first thing to do is reseat you processor, take of all old thermal paste. Apply new thermal paste (v thin layer) and replace heatsink. Quite often that may help.

Yeah, I think I may buy some Arctic Silver. I've read that helps a lot. I think I may have disturbed the thermal paste that's on there now, because I touched it with my fingers and stuff, and I removed my heatsink/fan a few times...
THanks a lot,
Derek

my mb temp has hit 50c before and all my fans went into full speed...its was fricken loud. Yeah 76 degrees is really hot...how high is your room temp?

bloody prescotts run hot all the time, mine runs at like 63 C idle and 79C under full load. That would be the reason im getting water cooling in about 6 days time..... HA HA shove that up your pipe and smoke it prescott!!!

So I put Arctic Silver on, and now it idles at 48 degrees, and gets up to like 64 while playing a game. Is that alright?

only the skt 478 have heat issues. Prescotts on skt775 should be ok

Not always. Got a pair of prescotts in this room (ambient 24C) and they run <42 and <55 respectively on full burn (a 3.0GHz S478 and 3.2GHz S775 respectively). Granted my S478 Prescott has aftermarket cooling mind you

That shows that AS5 is working now to keep it lower, get a better cooler
