is it worth $44 to buy the E6400 over the E6300?

well is it worth it?
will it overclock better?

should i spend the money on something else? not planning to build till around xmas, but planning it out now

Generally speaking the overclock won't be much greater, possibly an extra 50Mhz or so, not much.

I really cant say what i would personally choose, but if you get the E6400, it would be like getting the X2 4200+, it just sounds better :P

yes many will say it is worth it... because if i'm not mistaken, it starts out @ 300 Mhz higher clock speed (yes i know, big whoop) and it's got a X7 multiplier instead of a X6 i believe... so yes it'll overclock higher, maybe...

EDIT: i think i was describing the E6600 and the E6400... my bad...

If you look at the Pentium D 920 and 930 (one is 200Mhz faster), when they were both overclocked the 920 was about 30Mhz shy of the 930's max overclock. However the E6400 does have a lower multiplier, so you may end up getting a bit higher of an OC.

you are right geoff... but i thought he was talking about a E6600 and a E6400... not a 64 and 63... i was just saying that with the higher multiplier he should be able to overclock... but if you notice i said maybe after that... i didn't say for sure...

Yes, I'd recommend the e6400 soley because of the extra x1 multiplier. On my e6300, I hit a wall because I couldn't up the bus speed anymore. If I had a higher multiplier, I would be at around 3.7 - 3.8 GHZ with the max bus speed I hit on my board (around 480 - 485).

it depends on the proc you get. my X2 3800+ would o/c to 2.4ghz without an overvolt. some people got their X2 3800+'s to 3ghz without and overvolt. for all we know some peoplebought x2 4800+'s and couldn't overclock them at all without an overvolt. normally model doesnt help, but it does guarantee you hit a certain clock... like with the FX-62. it guarantee's that you hit 2.8ghz without an overvolt.

It depends if you are overclocking. If you aren't going to overclock it, get the E6300. If you are into overclocking and are willing to spend $44 to get an extra 300 Mhz - 500 Mhz on the clock speed (depending on how good the overclock is), get the E6400 :)

Well yea, it depends on the processor but who has a Core 2 that doesn't hit 3.0 GHZ? ;) (I know some people do, but I'm talking generally).

Honestly, you dont need a watercooling setup for the C2D. They run extremely cool, so you wont see much of a difference if you get one.
