Is it worth it to switch to SSD Hard Drive?

I use my laptop a lot and recently I installed a hard drive monitoring tool. It said that my primary hard drive has warning signs and that the health is at 50%. I was thinking I might just buy a new one to be safe and then just create an image and copy my entire hard drive over to the new one, but my question is, would it be better (since I'm upgrading anyways) to buy a solid state hard drive instead? I know it would increase the speed a bit and I'm assuming they would last longer too, but is it worth the $500 price tag to upgrade? Thoughts?
 
It's definately worth upgrading to, But only if it's well justified and you can afford it. you said your current HDD is dying so that's enough to buy an SSD or new ahrd drive alone.

If you don't use a lot of data, maybe get an 80GB SSD
 
Depends how you look at it, really. If you look at an SSD purely as a storage device then no, it isn't worth it all. If you look at it from a performance point of view then yes, it is definitely worth it. The difference is like night and day. It's silly to try and use SSD's to store everything you have.

When I get my SSD it's not going to have games, movies, or music on it. The best use would be to use it as a boot drive and install the programs you use most. Then use a standard HDD for everything else.
 
It is worth if if you can afford it and as Ethan pointed out, you shouldn't use it to store all of your multi-media, it should only be used to store really important documents and your most used applications.
 
For performance they cant be beaten, but i feel that they are still somewhat overpriced for what they are,
Instead of re-acting to some bit of software that you have installed it would be better if you downloaded and ran the h/d manufactor`s diagnostic tool and see what results that comes up with
 
I was thinking about getting an SSD (along with a HDD) as well for a new computer I'm building. When you guys say put programs you use a lot what's an example of this? Would you put itunes on the SSD and then all your actual music on the HDD? What are exapmples of the programs you have on your ssd? Also it's not a good idea to put at least the most used games on the ssd?
 
Yes SSDs are worth it. I have a 60GB one on my main rig and the difference is seriously night and day from my now storage drive. Heck, Photoshop loads in 3 seconds flat.
