i have a GeForce 5500 256Mb agp oc and was thinking about trying to run doom 3 or half-life 2 on my machine...only a 1.6 ghz processer and 512 ddr ram :( ...but was just wondering if they would run very smooth or if the graphics would end up being choppy

Thanks,

I'm not sure because I did not follow the FX series as closely as some as ATi was on top durring the whole Nvidia FX series (Not a fanboy comment but argueable fact) I would suggest anyone shoping for budget gameing cards to take a look at ATi of that time and budget. "Both companys are great and produce high quality cards".

I have to agree with Blue with what he said. As far as the 5500 being okay - its probably not going to be the limiting factor seeing as how the system is a little older. You might be able to play those games but probably at pretty low settings.

ok thanks for the help...i figured i'd probably need to upgrade my system...i was thinking a gig of ram atleast and not sure what processor i should get...maybe you can help me on this also?

You should probably start a new thread for that, probably just in "Desktop Computers". You'll also need to give your full system specs.

Doom 3 does support the FX series just try to keep the graphics on a lower scale and it should run alright

The 5500 is based on the 5200 core and for all intents and purposes, is a rebuilt 5200 running at a higher clock. You can play those games, just dont expect to punch the settings all that high :)
