Is my CPU weighing me down?

My specs are:
CPU:4x Intel i7 @2.8 GHz (Hyperthreaded)
Motherboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Graphics: Gigabyte R9 390 OC Edition (8GB vRam)
RAM: 12 GB (3x4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Storage: 100GB SSD (With Windows on it) and a 1TB Samsung HDD for general use
PSU: 850W Corsair (Don't know the exact name)

I can overclock the cores of the CPU to 3 GHz safely and 3.2 at a stretch, however these rise the maxed out cpu to 90 degrees and I dislike the idea of my CPU frying from a temp spike. Should I consider a new CPU? If so, should I get one with the same chipset so I don't have to change motherboards or not?

You didn't mention the specific CPU model, but I would assume it is a 920, which is (by the model of your mobo) socket 1366, which is six years old.

It's getting old... Unless you're looking at utilizing more modern storage devices (nvme ssd's, usb 3.0, etc...) the X58 shouldn't be weighing you down for gaming purposes so long as your video card is up to standards to today's gaming demands.

It also sounds like you're overclocking on the stock intel cooler. Don't do that. With a proper cooler, the i7 920 D0 should reach 4.0ghz with respectable temps at load.

Thank you both for your replies. I'm away from my house for a long while, or I'd have checked the exact CPU model for you. I stay away from overclocking it as my CPU won't like it. Should I get a new CPU/Mobo, CPU, or just a new cooler?

So I've had a look, in order of age, the socket 1366, 1155, and 2011 are the best 3 for Intel. Socket 1155 mobos seem more affordable for me, but is the difference between socket 1155 and 2011 worth making my account balance drop more?
