is my dvd drive toast

ok i got a virus i did not know to get rid of so backed couple files and formatted. ok so when computer went to install it did not work dvd was scratched pretty good. so i had it resurfaced at hastings and still nothing. it looks pretty new. is my dvd drive dead or is it the fact there is no operating system on it. computer fornatted but install did not work. dvd drive was working before. it acts like there is something wrong with the disc. when it now looks new. i tried diagonistics and it said dvd drive is fine. my brother is sending me his spare flash drive with his copy of windows 7 so i can install windows 7. any help here. is it because of no os or dvd drive. diagonstics said dvd drive fine. i have a studio xps 16 dvd drive is a blu ray reader as well.
 
What is the exact issue you are having? Does the windows installation boot up from the cd? Does it recognize the dvd drive in the bios?
 
diagonstis says dvd drive working fine. i put win 7 dvd in would not work. would start installing and would give error. so resurfaced dvd, then same thing so did it again and dvd looks new but wont load dvd now. maybe the dvd is bad dont know.
