A few days ago, I was talking to a friend of mine about computing and he said that the minimum requirement of RAM needed to get WinXP Pro SP2 working properly is about 1Gig of RAM. I said that it was about 128Mb but higher is obviously always recommended. Please tell me who is right?

1Gb, most normal PC users dont actually have that in the machine and dont pan to ever get that. I think you should smack your friend with something large and preferably sharp,

BTW, even you are wrong to a certain degree, a quick search on google throws up a wealth of knowledge, show this to your friend..... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sysreqs.mspx

Note that line near the top saying "64 Mb RAM"......??

personally I feel that 1 gb is what you need to run XP normally

512 is the bare minimum and will handle XP's processes and some user processes without difficulty

128 or less will work, but isn't worth it. Yes windows will "run" but it won't be pretty.

It all depends on your standard of running

on my old compaq, i had 256MB of PC133, i was able to run windows and norton very good, and i was even able to play UT2004 well. So 256MB is really the bare minimum if you want to use it with other programs, and i was able to play far cry with 512mb no problem. but of course, more is better. Right now im barely getting by with 1GB of ram.

If you keep your system clean than 256mb of ram will work fine for a light gamer and internet computer.
