Check to see if your processor and your system board is a 32 or 64 bit. Bear in mind: 32-bit OSes and programs will excel best on a 64 bit machine. Personally, I don't feel the need for 64bit OS/apps unless you are running a scientific laboratory--even then, I've heard that some universities and their colleges of science use simple Windows XP. Anyways, you cannot run a 64 bit app or OS on a 32-bit machine. If you manage to pull it off, your processor might literally melt.

Bear in mind that you cannot easily upgrade processors on laptops, so if it is a 32 bit processor, you'll just have to live with it. System boards (I call them motherboards other days) are unique to each laptop model--even among the same brand and even if the machine looks identical. Memory upgrades are easy.

You said it is a duo-core. It might be a 64bit. Check by opening My Computer. Since I am using Linux right now, I am not off-the-top of my head knowing exactly where to find this info, maybe System Properties???
