is my PC fast enough to run the new generation of cards?

in the future I’am going to do upgrades to my PC, but i only have money for a video card right now. so i want to get better video card for the next generation of games that come out. i don’t know what card im going to go with yet (6800 or x800) but that’s not my problem now. i just want to know how would my handle them if i did install one, or should i not even bother.

i have a
amd xp2000 (=1.6) with 266 FSB
asus a7s333 motherboard
512 of 333mhz DDR

you help would be welcomed

I'm not totaly sure but from what I've read the cpu bottnecks under 3ghz. I dont doubt thought that you'd benifit from one of the new graphics cards but you'd prob not really see a difference in performance between the Radeon X800Pro or Nvidia 6800GT type cards.

I'd suggest the Nvidia 6800GT over the Radeon X800Pro as a personal preference and it's more future proof then the X800 Pro is.

i think u need AGP8X , or else you'd be running it at 4X and would get like half of the read/write performance. correct me if im wrong...im not too smart about vid cards.

Been shopparound myself -- get the 6800GT ... better performance than X800Pro -- and cheaper

darn, so i guess im going to need to upgrade my pc after all
ohh well.

thanks for the help dudes

keep the suggestions coming......

but with my hardware that i am using now, how do you think that the card would perform?? what FPS would i expect to see when playing a game like CS:S?
also....STUPID QUESTION ALURT!
when playing doom3 i get some choppiness, is that because of my video card speed or my cpu speed?

I dunno wtf CS:S is... if it has anything to do with HL2 then you'll be fine as ive seen it play plenty fine on a 1.6Ghz NorthwoodA, 512MB PC2100, GF3Ti200 32MB.

As for your stupid question, could be both. Could also be the memory. Now that i looked at your specs, a few comments:
- Ive played D3 on a AthlonXP2100+ (1.73), 512MB PC2700, GF4Ti4600 128MB, A7V333 and it was choppy at 640x480 -- on Ultra detail -- but unbelievebly, still playable (of course you had to be real careful with your timing of the bullets)
- Currently, you can see my specs and i can handle 1024x768 @ High detail with the minor slowdown here and there. Ultra detail makes it choppy -- but playable -- if you're really RwALLY careful with your aim and timing (but effectively impossible still cuz you'll die really fast)

CS:S is counter strike source, counter strike 2 if you will

my settings on doom3 are 1024x768 on med detail and i get choppy, so i think it may be to much for my video card to take......

well i guess i should just get a new card and find out
because i was going to upgrade anyway, and i guess a new video card is the first step

and i think that im going to go for the 6800 GT, im starting to turn to it

You'll be fine. The HL2 engine takes a long time to fire up... once its up it plays smooth -- even on (MUCH) older systems

If you can play Doom3 at 1024x768 on medium with chop then you'll be fine with HL2 -- seriously.
