is my ram the reason why my computer won't boot up?

I have a msi K9A2 Platinum motherboard & I am using the crucial ballistic pc2-5300 ram and my computer won't boot. The led on the mother board is on and i double checked the power wires to the mother board, but it won't boot. this is my second mother board. I have replaced everything except the ram... i am not sure what the problem is yet..what do you guys think?

Generally with fauly memory you will immediately hear an audio alert with a beep code rather then the usual single beep when first powering up. You can run memtest or another disgnostic tool to see if errors are reported after letting the tests repeat themselves over a several hour period of time like overnight.

A battery gone on the board itself or something worse like component failure such as bad caps on the board will prevent the system from starting. A battery however is about a $3 item in a retail store's watch/jewelry dept. over finding out the board went! That would be the first thing to look at if the case is a year or so old.

Are you sure you have put the standoffs under the board in the right places and not put one where theres no hole in the board.

If you knew somebody with a stick of DDR2 you could pop in to see if it would boot that would eliminate the memory.

i have no usbs plugged in.

And that brings you right back to the board again. If this was a replacement for the first being found defective and the same model the vendor may have received a bad batch of boards! Helping someone out a year ago with a new build then saw the third Asus model being different then since the first two were DOA on arrival!

Once the third was up and running the first two were sent back. On the new build here recently the board went after the first 3 days and had to returned again most likely bad caps or a defective bios eprom.

I had an asus motherboard and it didn't boot, so i end up buying the msi k9a am2+ to support the phenom and this doesn't seem to boot either. I borrowed my friend's motherboard/cpu combo and it booted with my psu. and my psu is 600watts. so... im guessing it's the ram.

Bad memory or the wrong type incompatible with that model board will stall a system right away. But that will usually sound an alarm with a specific beep code pointing to memory as the problem. But that will still see at least the first post screen.

Another thing to consider is 1) make sure all connections are correct and plugged in and 2) try unplugging the four wire 12v cpu feed to see if that has a loose contact inside of the plug itself. http://www.computerforum.com/80790-bad-board-simply-need-replug.html

yeah my cpu thing is plugged in and the clip is snapped right on. it's the memory! damn im too broke to buy memory now. im going nuts! btw thanks for the help guys! i love this forum

I mentioned the cpu feed since I ran into that one when swapping out a 480w supply for a 550w model and "nothing happened"! For some reason I decided to unplug and then only finger tip lightly replug that back in to see everything fire right up then.

I'm sure you were hoping for something like that to be the problem there. Generally everyone is broke after the holidays. I'm currently looking to replace a now troublesome lcd that you fight with to see stay on instead of immediately going into standby every time the system is first started up. It stinks at this time of year! :(

Take the board with the processor on it out of the case and put it on a cardboard box beside the case- plug up the power supply- the case power switch- one stick of ram- video card and hit the power switch and see if you get a bios screen

To expand on what Stranglehold has said, I've seen USB devices, harddrives, RAM, dead CPUs, Optical drives exhibit those symptoms. Unplugging everything but the board, CPU and memory will enable you to figure out if one of them is at fault.

Pull the power plugs out of the devices as well. I have a computer sitting here beside me with two SATA powerplugs on the PSU. Plug in one SATA drive or the other and it's fine. Plug in both and the computer won't even power on.

yeah i took out all of the satas usbs connected to the motherboard too.

this guy from another forum posted a topic about the motherboard stating that the motherboard runs @ 1.9v while the ballistix ram im using is rated @ 2.2v in this 20 page thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=167447

does this mean i gotta borrow 1.8v ram have it boot up and change the settings in bios to 2.2v and return the 1.8v ram?
