Is my X2 3800 running too hot?

Well, I finally got a replacement mobo and everything is golden... just about.
After applying arctic silver 5 on my cpu to reinstall it in the new mobo, it seemed to be running hot... around 45C idle, 50+ load. So I took off the heatsink, cleaned everything up really well with the artic silver cleaning stuff, and reapplied the grease thinking i just didn't do it right. Well, it still runs around 45C idle and im wondering wtf is wrong, this seems a bit high. my old p4 in similar conditions ran around 38 idle and 45 under load. is this normal? my cpu is in sig.

Mine runs around 40C Idle, its probably a bit higher than normal, but not too bad. It takes some time for the thermal solution to dry and set, so give it a week or so and see if it cools down.

you gotta give the AS5 time to settling, there's a sort of breaking in period of about 200 hours, thats when you should see if you need to try reapplying.

during this period you should notice a drop in the temps

yea, but it wont drop but more than a few degrees, right? when i play bf2, my temp is around 51-53C, so when the as 5 is in full effect, ill still be runnin kinda warm... room temp is about 72F, and the "system" temp is 38C.
ill probably add an exhaust fan to the plexiglass directly across from the cpu, so maybe in combination it'll be about right.

UPDATE! perusing through bios and saw the smart fan target was disabled... so i set it to 40 and im runnin 38 idle now.. with extra fan and the as 5 i think i'll be good, thanks for all the help.

You dont want it to dry and set, it should stay sticky.

I thought you ran a sempron rig

I was thinking of a thermal pad, not thermal compound.

And my sempron runs at 40C idle.
